Qualcomm has opened applications for the 2026 cohort of its Make in Africa mentorship programme, an equity-free initiative aimed at supporting African startups in moving from early-stage technical concepts to market-ready products.
The programme focuses on deep tech and hardware-enabled innovation, areas that are often underrepresented in Africa’s predominantly software-driven startup ecosystem. Selected founders receive access to Qualcomm’s engineering expertise and intellectual property support.
Eligibility Criteria
- Must be an early-stage startup based and legally registered in an African country.
- Ideally at the Pre-Seed or Seed stage with a Minimum Viable Product (MVP) or a demonstrable prototype.
- Solutions must leverage advanced connectivity or processing technologies, including: (AI) & Machine Learning, 5G Connectivity, Internet of Things (IoT), Extended Reality (XR), Edge Computing & Embedded Systems, Hardware-based solutions (proposals using Arduino Uno Q platforms are welcome).
Pure software/basic e-commerce apps are generally less competitive for this hardware-focused initiative.
Benefits
- All startups that successfully complete program requirements are eligible for a USD $5,000 stipend.
- 1:1 mentorship with Qualcomm subject matter experts and engineering consultations to refine product design.
- Reimbursement of up to USD $5,000 for one full utility patent application.
- Dedicated consultation hours with Adams & Adams, Africa’s leading IP law firm.
- Access to expert-led training in AI, 5G, and IP Law via the Qualcomm Academy.
- A chance to showcase your innovation to industry leaders and VCs at the virtual finale and Demo Day in December 2026.
